LEAH W. HURWITZ

Co-Founder / Attorney (Retired)

Ms. Hurwitz is retired, and is no longer taking any immigration cases.

Ms. Hurwitz represented clients in their immigration matters from 1980 until 2018.  She founded and served as the managing attorney at Law Offices of Leah W. Hurwitz, APLC, from 1980 until 2011.  Further, she is a retired shareholder from Hurwitz Holt, APLC, which she co-founded in 2011.   All of us at the firm congratulate Ms. Hurwitz on her extensive career during which she changed lives and trajectories through her dedicated and passionate work in the immigration field and we now wish her the very best in her retirement.

While in practice, Ms. Hurwitz served within the Immigration Section of the San Diego County Bar Association (SDCBA) as secretary and vice-president and served within the San Diego County Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) as secretary and treasurer. Ms. Hurwitz guest-lectured on Immigration law at the University of San Diego School of Law and served for several years as an AILA mentor for other immigration attorneys.  Among her many other awards and speaking commitments, she was rated a 2013 “Top Attorney” by the San Diego Daily transcript and was a panelist on Business/Naturalization Derivative Citizenship at the 2016 AILA national conference.

MATTHEW G. HOLT

Owner / Managing Attorney

Mr. Holt joined The Law Offices of Leah W. Hurwitz, APLC in 2007 and co-founded Hurwitz Holt, APLC with Ms. Hurwitz in 2011.  He handles all aspects of immigration law. He is certified by the California State Bar Association as an Immigration and Nationality Law Specialist. He regularly represents the firm’s clients in Immigration Court and on appeal with regard to asylum, bond eligibility, cancellation of removal, and adjustment of status. He also represents the firm’s clients in consular processing, adjustment of status, and employment-based immigration. His unwavering commitment to justice and dedication to the firm’s clients have led to exemplary results in even the most difficult cases.

As part of Mr. Holt’s commitment to helping families, improving U.S. immigration law, and passion for his work, he is an active member of the San Diego Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), and works with the California Western School of Law’s Community Law Project, and the American Bar Association’s Immigration Justice Project. He works with the local media and members of the U.S. Congress at the local level and in Washington, DC, to promote immigration reform. He has spoken on panels at local, state-wide and national AILA conferences, MCLE workshops for the San Diego County Bar Association, and law schools and colleges. He has also been featured on or in National Public Radio, San Diego Union-Tribune, Despierta San Diego (Channel 17), KUSI News (Channel 9), NBC News, and the North County Times.

Moreover, because Mr. Holt recognizes the need for effective legal representation throughout the immigration process, but the difficulty for some families and individuals to afford representation, he regularly handles various types of immigration cases on a pro bono basis and is proud that Hurwitz Holt, APLC provides pro bono legal representation on several cases each year to individuals and families.

In his free time, Mr. Holt enjoys spending time with his wife and son, surfing, camping, hiking, soccer, food, the outdoors, traveling, languages, and playing chess.
